How Tannin estimates
A sourced estimate, not a number pulled out of thin air.
For each bottle, Tannin starts from what you entered or what AI read on the label: estate, cuvée, appellation, vintage, and bottle size. It then looks up the public prices an equivalent bottle sells for today, from online wine merchants and auction results.
Each valuation includes its source and date. You know where the figure comes from. You can replace it with your own value if you have more accurate information, an actual resale price, or an appraisal. With the Enthusiast subscription, values across your entire cellar are updated monthly. In the free version, you run the valuation whenever you want using your API key.
An estimate is only an estimate. It does not carry the weight of a certified appraisal, and the actual price of a bottle depends on its condition, its provenance, and the buyer of the day. It is, however, a reliable ballpark figure, consistent over time, and sufficient for most decisions: insuring, keeping, opening, or selling.

Decide what to open, what to keep
A wine whose value has tripled is worth considering: drink it, or sell it to buy three others. By displaying the drinking window alongside the value, Tannin makes this choice clear.
Pass down or sell
Inheritance, moving, or changing tastes: a dated, valued inventory is the starting point for any sale, whether through a wine merchant, at auction, or between collectors.
FAQ
Wine value and price: what people ask us.
Are the estimates reliable?
They are based on real public prices, looked up wine by wine, with the source and date displayed. They give a consistent ballpark figure, not a guaranteed sale price. For an exceptional bottle, cross-check with a wine merchant or an auction house.
Where do the prices come from?
Prices listed by online wine merchants and publicly available auction results. Tannin cites the source used for each wine, so you can check for yourself.
What if a wine cannot be found?
Some wines from small estates or older vintages have no public price. Tannin states this rather than guessing, and lets you enter your own value, such as the purchase price or that of a similar vintage.
How often is the value updated?
Every month for the entire cellar with the Enthusiast plan. In the free version, run the valuation whenever you want using your API key.
Can I enter my own value?
Yes, for any bottle. Your value replaces the estimate in the totals, and Tannin tracks where the figure came from.
Does Tannin sell my wine?
No. Tannin is not a marketplace and takes no commission. It provides the information; the sale, if any, happens wherever you choose.
