Before the damage
What an insurer will ask for, and nobody has to hand.
Most home insurance policies cover your home's contents, including wine, up to a set limit. Beyond that, or for a high-value cellar, you must declare it. In all cases, if a claim occurs, the burden of proof is on you.
A dated inventory
The list of bottles, their quantity, vintage, and size, at a given date. Last year's inventory is worth little if you have bought wine since.
Proof of value
Purchase invoices if available, or a reasoned market estimate with source and date. Grands crus bought fifteen years ago are no longer worth their purchase price.
Photos
A photo of the label, and if possible of the cellar itself. This is the simplest way to show that the bottle actually existed, and its condition.
Location
In case of a wine fridge breakdown or localized water damage, knowing which bottles were in which rack makes the difference between partial and fair compensation.
Keeping all of this updated manually is work that almost no one does. Tannin does this for you, bottle by bottle, as you buy and open wines. The report is not a document you prepare: it is a snapshot of your cellar, the moment you request it.
How it works
From cellar to report, in three steps.
1
Inventory your cellar
Photograph each label: AI reads the estate, cuvée, vintage, and appellation. Or import your Excel spreadsheet in one go. Place the bottles in your racks, exactly as they are.
2
Let Tannin estimate
For each wine, Tannin finds the market price, citing the source and date. View your total value, purchase price, and gains. Adjust an estimate whenever you have more accurate information.
3
Generate the report
One click, and you get a dated PDF: full list, photos, locations, value per bottle, and total. Send it to your insurer, keep a copy outside your home.
Best practices
Four habits to make sure you are covered.
Keep the invoices
Take a photo of them and store them in an online folder. Tannin records the purchase price of each bottle, but the invoice remains the strongest proof for an insurer.
Declare above the cap
Read your policy: contents are often capped, and "valuables" have their own rules. If your cellar exceeds these amounts, talk to your insurer with the report in front of you.
Keep the inventory up to date
A January report will not cover the six cases received in March. With Tannin, just saying "I bought six Morgons" keeps the inventory up to date. Regenerate the PDF twice a year.
Keep a copy elsewhere
Damage that hits the cellar often hits the house as well. Keep the PDF in an online space or with a relative: Tannin keeps your cellar away from your home, but one more copy costs nothing.
FAQ
Insurance and wine cellar: what people ask us.
Does the Tannin report have legal value?
It is a dated inventory and a market price estimate, not a certified appraisal. It provides solid documentary proof: list, photos, locations, price sources. For a very high-value cellar, an insurer may ask for an independent appraisal in addition.
How does Tannin estimate bottle values?
Based on public sale prices and auction results, searched by AI for each wine, vintage, and bottle size. Each estimate shows its source and date. You can replace it with your own value if you have more accurate information.
What exactly does the PDF contain?
The list of all bottles in the cellar as of the report date, with estate, cuvée, vintage, appellation, bottle size, quantity, location, purchase price, market value, and label photo, followed by cellar totals and the breakdown by color and region.
Is the Enthusiast subscription required?
The insurance report uses AI for estimates. It is included in Enthusiast. In the free version, it works with your own API key, billed on usage by the AI provider.
My wine fridge broke down, what should I do?
Photograph the display and the bottles, note the date, and generate the report immediately to record the state of the cellar. Then report the claim to your insurer within your policy's deadline, attaching the PDF.
Is my data secure?
Your cellar is stored online, away from your home. It is visible only to you and the people you invite. You can export your entire cellar to CSV at any time.
This information outlines standard practices. It does not replace your policy terms or advice from your insurer.
